Effects of Mode Dispersion on Cross-phase modulation on Mode Division Multiplexed Opt...
Reinhardt Rading
December 11, 2021
The concept of mode division multiplexing also known as space division multiplexing was introduced as an alternative to combat the approaching capacity crunch in single mode fibers. Just like single mode fibers, space division multiplexed fibers will experience non-linearity at a different level and studies have shown that some linear effects can be beneficial in combating the nonlinear interference. This study aims to identify the benefits accrued when these linear effects are implemented by exploring the already existing models defined in the literature.
Cost Benefit Analysis of Elastic and Mixed Line Rate Optical Network Models
Reinhardt Rading
March 05, 2021
Network traffic continues to grow at more than 30 percent per year and we either have to install new optical infrastructures or upgrade our optical networks to meet the increasing demands. Installing new fibers seems very costly the network operators considering the heterogeneity of optical networks with some consumers requiring low bit rate and others requiring high bit rate demands. As an alternative, we can use the existing fiber infrastructure to meet the traffic demands by aggregating both high and low bit rate demands or using a single type of rate-tunable technology to handle the increasing demands. This paper analyzes the two planning strategies-all period planning and incremental planning- for allocating resources in an increasing traffic and shows the pros and cons that a network operator may experience in case of using either elastic or mixed line rate optical networks.
Evaluation of Nonlinear Interference Effects in a Dispersion Managed (DM) Optical Fib...

October 17, 2020
This paper investigates the impact on the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the residual per span (RDPS) in a N × 100km dispersion managed system with zero total accumulated dispersion from input to output using split step Fourier method (SSFM) -Monte Carlo simulation. This paper shows that the nonlinear interference NLI does in-fact impact the performance yielding different best working power depending on the value of Nx100 km span and the type of dispersion managed link. The paper shows that dispersion uncompensated optical links are preferable to dispersion managed fibers in equalizing NLI effects in long haul optical links.
Fall detection and prevention among elderly persons using wearable technologies

February 14, 2020
Falling down is prevalent among elderly persons resulting to to injuries, disability and even death. United Nations predicts a double increase in population of persons aged 65 and above by 2050 hence a need to research on methods for detecting and preventing falls from occurring. This paper presents a theoretical proposal on detecting and preventing a fall using RFID and wearable technologies.
